Introducing Mike McNamara

My pillars are Faith, Family, and Freedom.

"I believe that one man can make a difference and that I will be elected to protect and serve my constituents."

Born and raised in Austin, I am a 4th generation Austinite. I come from a long line of entrepreneurs. My great-grandfather settled in Travis County in the late 1800’s after a career in the U.S. Army. He opened a general store in what is now East Austin around 11th Street. My parents had a bakery here in Austin until the late 1950’s. I am the youngest of six in my family and grew up in the Travis Heights neighborhood. I graduated from Travis High School in 1965. While playing b-team football at Travis, I suffered a neck injury ending my football career, and I decided to take up guitar which led to the formation of a garage band, Tim Lively and the Profits. We did quite well locally and appeared on television weekly. We even played at the world premiere of the Batman movie parade event in Austin in 1966.

I am a Viet Nam era veteran serving in the Navy from 1967 to 1974. I received extensive (almost two years) specialized Navy training. In my job as electronics technician I served two years in Alaska including two summers in the Arctic at Pt. Barrow, Alaska. I served two years aboard the USS McCloy DE1038, and finished my service stationed at Chase Naval Air Station in Beeville, TX. I am proud of my service and I received a letter of appreciation for my two years served in Alaska based mainly on the independent duty in Pt. Barrow.

I returned home and upon graduation with a Bachelor of Journalism degree from The University of Texas, I began working in technical documentation for companies including: Tracor, Texas Instruments, Austron, and currently SCCI. With over 30 years in the technology and defense industries besides documentation my experiences include project manager leading state and national business development, managing marketing communication and advertising programs, developing trade show and promotional materials, and developing and supervising an international export business group.

My wife, Julia, and I recently celebrated 17 years of marriage. When I married Julia, I became the proud step-parent of four married children, 11 grandchildren, and two great- grandchildren. We attend Our Lady's Maronite Catholic Church in Austin where we both have served on the parish advisory council.
