Travis County has become a fertile bed for international gang activity and a portal for drug and human trafficking. Interstate 35 is a major conduit for these activities. Drugs and theft are rampant, even in traditionally safe neighborhoods. Recent reports indicate that in one of our suburban communities, the dangerous gang, La Familia, had taken root to distribute drugs. We are witnessing gang recruitment in our schools: Indeed, one of our Travis County high schools was recently shut down by a female gang fight.
In Mexico, drug cartels are setting the agenda for the Mexican government, which took the “too little, too late” approach to dealing with the problem. Here in Travis County, many of our elected leaders want to do the same – dancing around today’s problems in the hopes that someone else will deal with them tomorrow. This is unacceptable. We need new leadership who will deal with direct solutions to problems that will not go away on their own.
My goal is to ensure that Travis County law enforcement is fully staffed and equipped to operate at its optimal level in order to handle these threats. I want to ensure that our county deputies are trained and supplied with the best available resources in order to protect our schools, our parks, and our neighborhoods from gang infiltration and recruiting, drug sales, prostitution, carjacking, gang initiation assaults, and home invasions. The citizens of Travis County have the right to live in a safe community free from crime and drugs, and I am committed to breaking down any barrier to this ideal.
