Every increase in property taxes represents another nail in the coffin for the dreams of Travis County homeowners. Many people who have strong roots in this community are considering uprooting themselves for fear that they cannot afford to retire here. Many people are telling me, “It’s like I’m buying my house all over again.”
For business owners, the steady rise in property taxes represents a serious threat to commerce. The additional tax burden placed on our business leaders severely limits a company’s ability to hire employees and to invest in the future.
When elected Travis County Judge, I will work to establish a reasonable and transparent method of appraisals, and I will stop the steady push to raise the property tax rate.
Further, I will push for property tax reform. Tom Pauken, Chairman of the Texas Workforce Commission, proposed a list of workable ideals when he was Chair of the Governor's Committee on Property Tax Reform. With this list as reference, I will work with state legislators to find a more equitable and fair tax program whereby property owners will know from year to year what they are expected to pay. Greater transparency is the best method for enabling long-term planning for the residents and business owners of Travis County.
