Transportation

As an Austin native and long-time resident, I have witnessed as state and local governments have continually failed to provide Travis County residents with safe, adequate roadways.

Interstate 35 was built inadequately from its inception. My mother knew the engineers who laid it out and recounted to my family stories that they wanted to lay out more lanes and plan for the inevitable future growth. Politicians stopped the original plans.

Furthermore, we still have no real east-west thoroughfare for traffic. Instead, our tax money is presently being spent on utopian transit ideals that will not suffice in supporting the growing number of trucks and other traffic passing through Central Texas roadways.

Fiscal mismanagement, poor judgment, and misguided idealism have put us decades behind in planning and developing safe, adequate roadways for the residents of Travis County. Commuter railways have been forced on us, and toll roads laid over existing roadways have understandably enraged taxpayers. Hwy 130 is failing to fulfill its promised goal of getting heavy trucks off of I-35 due to tolls that are prohibitive to commercial usage. These attempted solutions have proven ineffective in addressing the growing problems of traffic congestion and safety hazards. Indeed, Austin still has the unfortunate distinction as host to one of the worst downtown “bottlenecks” in the state and, quite possibly, the nation.

My goal is to place fiscally responsible and knowledgeable citizens on the transportation committees. We need realistic, common sense business models in developing the Travis County mobility growth plans into the future. We must stop wasting finite resources on schemes that hinder our bottom line and fail to address our transportation problems. It is bad enough to pay unreasonable taxes: To waste our tax money is immoral.
